I have made many friends with the wonderful, diverse residents of the Here There community camp. Among them are artists, agriculturalists, political activists, neuroatypical, disabled, elderly, as well as young and their friendly dog companions. They are welcoming and generous with the donations they receive. Feel free to say “hello” next time you’re in the neighborhood!

Fences Suck. Let’s build more houses and fewer fences. This is not helping. Pushing the homeless off public land is wrong. Maybe Berkeley and Oakland should get their act together and turn this fence into some tiny houses designed by the artist. That would be beautiful.

This sculpture is incredibly offensive, effectively making Oakland and its residents into “the other”. It sits at the border between Berkeley and Oakland - a border rife with implications of race and class. Berkeley is presented as Here: the interior, the home, the origin, the norm, the self. Oakland is presented as the exterior, the outside, the other.

The Berkeley city council could have easily turned down or altered the sculpture, which was originally commissioned in 2005 to welcome people to Berkeley by marking the border (a questionable goal in itself, given the implications of race and class). Unfortunately, though some raised concerns at the time, the sculpture was allowed to be erected, and now we have a 15-foot high reminder of the privileged, hegemonic position of Berkeley residents every time we pass the busy intersection of MLK and Stanford.
